A bit of history about the Ancrum MC
Prospective members often ask about the sort of activities the club does , why we are a Mountaineering Club and why we are based in Dundee when Ancrum is in the Borders. I hope this helps.
Who we are
The AMC is a small and friendly group of people, of diverse ages and backgrounds, who share a passion for the Scottish Highlands. Our main activity is hill-walking in its widest sense, from easy low level walks to long and more technical hill-walks. Other activities are also catered for in the meets programme. The minimum age for joining is 18, but there is no set standard of experience required for new members.
Every month we have a weekend meet and a monthly Sunday meet at the end of every month except December. The AMC also has two long weekends at the May and October holidays.
We are afficiated to the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MC of S)which brings us significant benefits including use of club huts, third party insurance and a nice glossy magazine. The M C of S also acts as a voice for environmental and other issues.
Why the name Ancrum Mountaineering Club?
AMC was formed (in 1976) by a group of keen walkers who met on various outdoor courses organised by Ancrum Activities Centre at Dundee. We enjoyed each other's company and decided to form a club after a few trial runs. Ancrum Mountaineering Club was chosen as the name as the outdoor centre was our common link.
Incidentally, a few other clubs were spawned in a similar manner, namely the Ancrum Canoe Club and Ancrum Karate School. The Karate School is still very active and has its own premises in the Seagate, Dundee. The Ancrum Canoe Club is also very much alive with its own web site.
The Ancrum Outdoor Education Centre (as it is now called) is still in existence and runs courses in outdoor activities, and hires gear.
Perhaps you are wondering about the name of the Ancrum Outdoor Centre. Simple. It is located in Ancrum Road, Dundee.
Mountaineering - isn't that ropes and stuff?
Mountaineering encompasses a whole variety of mountain activities such as hillwalking, back packing, rock climbing, ski mountaineering. Quite often, people link these activities with other interests such as photography, sketching, bird watching and of course socialising!
Most activities of the club centre around hillwalking, munro bagging, low-level walking and don't forget the socialising. We did have a regular rock climbing group in the early days, but only a few of us still participate, but it would be nice if more folk were interested. There are also some keen (and fit) cross country skiers.
Therefore I hope you agree that mountaineering is an appropriate tag for the club.
