Ancrum MC - Membership and Guest details

The AMC is a small and friendly group of people, of diverse ages and backgrounds, who share a passion for the Scottish Highlands. Our main activity is hill-walking in its widest sense, from easy low level walks to long and more technical hill-walks. Other activities are also catered for in the meets programme. The minimum age for joining is 18, but there is no set standard of experience required for new members. Read more about the background of the club here.

Practical Details

Prospective new members are welcome on one or two meets as guests. Travel to meets is by shared cars, which brings flexibility to our choice of activity on the day: we sometimes all go on the same walk, and sometimes split into smaller groups. For weekend meets, the travel expenses are financed via a Petrol Fund. We use club huts and sometimes camp during the warmer months. Huts have well-equipped kitchens and all meets are self-catering. We often stop on the way home for coffee and cakes. If you decide to join us the annual subscription is currently £16.00.

Equipment

Throughout the year you will need a sturdy pair of boots, a daypack, spare clothes (e.g warmfleece) effective waterproofs, and warm clothes. You must carry a survival bag, gloves/mitts, hat, map, compass, whistle, food, spare food and first aid equipment at all times. You should use a layering system for your clothing (e.g. a base layer, thin fleece, heavier fleece and waterproofs). Depending on the venue, you may need a sleeping mat, sleeping bag and camping equipment. For winter meets, we require that you carry and be able to use an ice axe and crampons as a safety precaution (these can be supplied to guests). In the summer months, we have found midge protection to be very desirable!

Training

Some people are apprehensive about venturing into the mountains, aware that they lack experience. We regularly organise (or recommend) training courses in navigation and winter skills, taught by professional guides. These courses give you the skills you need to safely enjoy the mountains, and are great fun too. In addition, the experienced members of the club are always willing to provide informal training during meets. See our safety pages.
